History, the royal family and symbols

Geschiedenis en het koningshuis

The Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy. You will learn about the king's role, key periods in history, days of remembrance and celebration, and national symbols.

Explanation

Monarchy and democracy

The Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy: there is a king at the head of the state, but the country is governed by an elected parliament and government. It is also a parliamentary democracy.

In this topic you will learn about the royal family, important periods in Dutch history, national days and symbols. The KNS exam almost always has a few questions on this topic.

The king and the government

Since 2013 the king has been Willem-Alexander; his wife is Queen Máxima. The heir to the throne is their eldest daughter, Princess Amalia. The king doesn't make political decisions; laws are made by the government and parliament, and the ministers carry the responsibility.

The king signs laws, and every year on Prinsjesdag, the third Tuesday of September, he reads the Troonrede in Den Haag, which sets out the government's plans. The capital is Amsterdam, but the government and parliament are in Den Haag. The Tweede Kamer of parliament has 150 members.
