A formal email template for the writing exam
Writing a short formal email is one of the most common Schrijven tasks. Here is a four-step template: greeting, purpose, details and closing.

Writing tasks are usually assessed on three things: did you include the information the task asks for, is the text clear, and is the grammar good enough. Using a template takes care of the first two.
The four-step template
- Greeting: Geachte heer/mevrouw,
- Purpose: say why you are writing in one sentence.
- Details: write one sentence for each point the task asks for.
- Closing: Met vriendelijke groet, and your name.
A short example
Geachte mevrouw, Ik schrijf u omdat ik mijn afspraak wil verzetten. Ik kan dinsdag niet komen, want ik moet werken. Kan ik donderdag om tien uur komen? Met vriendelijke groet, DenizCheck before you send
- Did you answer every question in the task?
- Does every sentence have a conjugated verb?
- Are the greeting and closing formal?
