The most commonly confused topics in KNS
Gemeente or provincie? Huisarts or hospital? The civic knowledge topics candidates mix up most often, and how to tell them apart.
KNS and KNM questions usually describe an everyday situation and ask "What do you do?" or "Who do you go to?". The key to finding the right answer is knowing what each institution is responsible for.
Municipality (gemeente) and province (provincie)
For everyday matters such as registering your address, ID documents and marriage, you go to the gemeente. The province deals with larger-scale matters; in daily life you rarely need to contact it.
GP and hospital
When you fall ill, your first point of contact is the huisarts (GP). You usually go to hospital on a referral from your GP. In life-threatening emergencies, you call 112.
School and compulsory education
From a certain age, children are required to attend school. In questions about school, "talking to the teacher" is usually the right thing to do.
How to remember
- Make a one-sentence "what does it do" card for each institution.
- Look for clues in the picture: a white coat, a sign or an office desk often gives the answer away.
- Answer five questions on the same topic in a row; any confusion shows up within the first two.
